Charles W. Johnson
Founder and Chairman of the Board

As a founder and the chairman of Visual Numerics, Chuck is responsible for long-range business planning.

Chuck has been in the computer industry for over 52 years. Prior to founding Visual Numerics, Chuck was a systems engineering manager for International Business Machines Corporation (IBM). He started his career at Massachusetts Institute Of Technology (MIT), and then was a first lieutenant and manager of the computer center at the U.S. Army Engineer Research And Development Center (ERDC).

Chuck is affiliated with the following organizations: emeritus director of Congdon Orchards, member of the Advisory Board of Johnson Bank, member of the MIT Alumni Fund Board, member of the MIT Corporation Development Committee, member of the MIT Educational Council, member of Major Benefactors of the Mayo Clinic, president of the Racine, WI Police and Fire Commission, and vice chair of the Racine, WI Zoological Society.

In 1955, Chuck completed his graduate school degree (Engineer's Degree) at MIT. He also earned his B.S. in Engineering in 1952 from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Phil Fraher
President and Chief Executive Officer

Phil is President and Chief Executive Officer of Visual Numerics with overall responsibility for Sales, Marketing, Finance, Human Resources and Research & Development worldwide. Prior to this role, Phil was Chief Operating Offer for Visual Numerics and played a strategic role in the company's current direction.

Phil has extensive experience in high tech especially with technology for data intensive environments. Phil has held various senior roles in finance and operational management including venture capital fund raising, mergers and acquisitions management, international operations growth and development, joint venture development, and web portal strategy and deployment.

Prior to joining Visual Numerics, Phil was COO and CFO at Brightmail, Inc., a successful venture-backed Bay Area start-up company, where he led the raising of $35M in venture capital for the company in one of the most difficult economic environments experienced in decades. Phil also led Brightmail's expansion efforts into Europe and Asia Pacific.

Phil also served as CFO at Cahners Business Information Electronic Media Division, where he developed a sophisticated Web portal strategy to grow that company's business. Phil has also served as the Vice President of Finance at Pilot Software and Dun & Bradstreet Corporation. Earlier in his career, Phil was a software engineer at Exxon where he was involved in developing visualization software for oil exploration.

Phil holds seats on the Advisory Board at the College of Computer Science and Engineering at Auburn University, and the Alumni Advisory Council at the William E. Simon Graduate School of Business Administration at the University of Rochester. Phil received his B.S. in Computer Engineering from Auburn University in Auburn, Alabama, and his M.B.A. from the William E. Simon Graduate School of Business Administration at the University of Rochester.

Clare Bannister Johnson, Ph.D.

Clare is currently a Wellness Consultant, serves on the Congdon Orchards, Inc. Advisory Board, and is the Assistant Softball Coach at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside. Prior to her current commitments, she worked at Baxter International, Inc. as a Business Analyst and Industrial Engineer and at Computer Associates International, Inc. as a Consulting Engineer and Programmer Analyst. She worked for Visual Numerics, Inc. and utilized the company's PV-WAVE software for data analysis during the writing of her Ph.D. thesis (http://www.visualnumerics/successes/pdf/Success_PennAging.pdf).

In addition to industry experience, Clare has extensive research and teaching experience at several prominent universities. She has held positions such as Visiting Assistant Professor at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside, conducting research in the areas of Sport Biomechanics and Aging & Wellness, and teaching the core courses in the Fitness Management major. She was also a Graduate Research Assistant at The Pennsylvania State University, researching Aging and Postural Control and teaching in the Department of Kinesiology, and a Research Assistant at Northwestern University, Industrial Engineering/Management Science Department.

Clare has also served on a number of committees and is a member of a broad range of professional associations, including: the American College of Sports Medicine, Sigma Delta Epsilon/Graduate Women in Science, Human Factors & Ergonomics Society, The National Society of Professional Engineers, International Society of Biomechanics, National Strength and Conditioning Association, and the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance.

In 1999, Clare completed her Ph.D. in Kinesiology from The Pennsylvania State University. She also earned her M.S. in Industrial Engineering from Northwestern University in 1983 and her B.S. in Systems Engineering with Distinction from the University of Arizona in 1981.
