Visual Numerics Announces Immediate Availability of IMSL Fortran Library 5.0

New Optimization Algorithms and Improved Interface

SAN RAMON, Calif. January 28, 2003 Visual Numerics, Inc., a leading provider of numerical analysis and visualization software, today announced the immediate availability of IMSL Fortran Library Version 5.0, the Company's flagship IMSL product for Fortran developers.

IMSL Fortran Library 5.0, has expanded its offering with new routines and easier to use interface modules, while retaining full backwards compatibility. The IMSL Fortran Library 5.0 is the only comprehensive library of mathematical and statistical algorithms for Fortran developers available in one cohesive package. It combines the powerful and flexible interface features of the Fortran language with the performance benefits of both distributed memory and shared memory multiprocessing architectures.

In addition to IMSL's popular and easy to use naming conventions, the new IMSL Fortran Library now uses the latest Fortran protocol throughout to include applicable optional arguments, which saves time and reduces complexity in programming. These features further improve IMSL's benefits to developers, including accelerating development time, reducing coding hassle, improving quality, and reducing development cost. The company has also added new optimization functionality and new statistical time-series algorithm codes, making it the most comprehensive set of Fortran libraries available and supported in a single package.

What's New:

One Cohesive and Comprehensive Package
  • All F77, F90 and parallel processing features are now contained within a single IMSL Fortran Library package
Faster and Easier to Use Interface Modules
  • The latest Fortran protocol is used throughout to include optional arguments, allowing for greater control and faster, simpler code development
  • Short list of required arguments speeds programming and simplifies documentation while also providing full depth and control of optional arguments
New, More Robust Non-linear Optimization
  • New nonlinearly constrained optimization routine
New Time-series Algorithm Functionality
  • Time series analysis is heavily used for analysis and forecasting in many fields, including economics, financial engineering, climate analysis, data mining, manufacturing, aerospace, and many more.
  • MAX_ARMA Exact maximum likelihood estimation of the parameters in a univariate Autoregressive Moving Average (ARMA) time series model.
  • Automatic Model Selection Fitting routines, both univariate and multi-variate versions, with a selection of methodologies
  • Bayesian Seasonal adjustment for time series data.
  • New GARCH routine
Other New Algorithm Functionality
  • Quasi Monte-Carlo routine for high-dimensional integration
  • Faure sequence routine
Expanded SMP/OpenMP support for parallel processing environments.
  • Computationally intensive algorithms in the areas of linear systems and matrix manipulation, eigensystem analysis, and fast Fourier transforms (FFTs) will leverage SMP capabilities on a variety of systems.
Because of the strong background Fortran has in high performance computing, Fortran appeals to highly performance driven numerical computation developers. The Fortran Library 5.0 is currently available on the following platforms:
  • HP-UX B.11.00
  • HP/Compaq Tru64 UNIX V5.1A
  • Solaris 8
  • AIX 5L for Power V5.1

The IMSL Fortran Library 5.0 on Red Hat Linux 7.2 and Windows NT/ 2000/XP will be available in the coming weeks.

The latest release of the IMSL Fortran Library 5.0 integrates the 30-year-trusted IMSL libraries, which have become the most widely used math and statistical libraries for developing data analysis applications. The IMSL line includes libraries of high-end math and statistical codes that developers can embed directly into their Fortran, C, or Java code, thereby accelerating development, improving quality, and reducing development cost.
