Visual Numerics Helps Universities Teach Mathematical and Statistical Analysis with Java™-based Numerical Analysis Tools

JMSL™ Numerical Library Featured in Nationwide "Knowledge in Motion™" Education Program

San Ramon, CA - September 9, 2003 - Visual Numerics Inc., a leading provider of numerical analysis and visualization software, today announced "Knowledge in Motion", an education program designed to bring Java -based statistical and mathematical technology to the classroom. With Knowledge in Motion, based on the JMSL Numerical Library for Java applications, university professors can leverage JMSL to develop applications in Java for a variety of computationally-based disciplines such as engineering, mathematics, statistics and computer science in order to encourage students to understand the concepts of numerical analysis and statistical methods.

With the JMSL Numerical Library for Java applications, the combination of mathematics and statistics in conjunction with charting capabilities gives instructors the ability to create applications that visually represent the behavior of underlying mathematical and statistical principles. JMSL is the only fully supported and documented Java Numerical Library based on the IMSLTM Numerical Libraries that includes charting and an easy to use Application Quick Start Pack. The Application Quick Start Pack contains source code for an existing set of integrated applications to get professors quickly up to speed with their application development. In addition, Java provides the most open and widely used platform for professors to develop analytical applications and deploy them to students with mixed computing platforms. A number of universities, including University of Texas at Austin, University of Iowa, McGill University and University of Colorado, have signed up as charter members and plan to use JMSL for courses in statistics, computer science and engineering.

Knowledge in Motion™ Program Membership

As charter members of the Knowledge in Motion program, professors of accredited universities or colleges receive:

  • Free personal use license of JMSL for course development
  • A complete three volume set of the JMSL documentation
  • Product support
  • A discount on purchases of other Visual Numerics products for personal use
  • Free registration for JMSL product web seminars

"I develop my own class library of probability functions, statistical algorithms, and chart types to teach statistical concepts. By using Visual Numerics' JMSL libraries instead, I know that I'm using well-tested and documented algorithms and I won't have to spend as much time writing code," said Gary McClelland, Professor of Marketing and Psychology and Statistics Teacher at the University of Colorado, Boulder. "More importantly, I'll be able to focus my efforts on teaching statistical concepts instead of developing an infrastructure of class libraries."

"For more than 30 years, Visual Numerics has been dedicated to giving professors the most advanced numerical analysis and visualization tools available for accelerating student comprehension of mathematics and statistics," said Phil Fraher, COO of Visual Numerics. "By using the JMSL Numerical Library in the classroom, universities are helping students master the science of analysis for critical markets such as life sciences, aerospace, manufacturing and finance on one of the most flexible and widely used platforms available."

About the JMSL Numerical Library

The JMSL Numerical Library is comprehensive set of mathematical, statistical and charting classes written in 100% Java and based on Visual Numerics' reliable IMSL algorithms. JMSL includes:

  • The JMSL Numerical Library Application Quick Start Pack - a set of pre-built applications that can be used for a jump-start on creating analytical programs and rapid idea generation. These programs combine computational examples with graphical output to provide a visual representation of the underlying mathematics and statistics in use.
  • More than fifteen chart types for displaying computational results
  • Source code for over 200 document examples covering the entire set of JMSL Java classes.
