This application demonstrates
JWAVE's ability to process large amounts of live data in the form
of global weather information and ship locations at sea. This JWAVE
demo allows personnel onboard ocean-going vessels to retrieve information
in their Web browser and illustrates how JWAVE can be used to create
and distribute visual data analysis applications.
The application shows
a map of the Earth. You can view the position of ships in the fleet,
wind direction, atmospheric pressure and tropical storms. You can
manually enter the center latitude and longitude you wish to view
or you can click on the map to set these fields interactively. You
can zoom in and out to see different areas of the map and have it
drawn from multiple projections.
Directions
- Click on the map to
select the point you wish to view or manually enter the longitude
and latitude by typing them in the Mapping text fields.
- You can zoom in and
out by typing in a number from 0 to 50 in the Zoom Factor text
field. (0 is the entire globe and 50 zooms in the closest.)
- Select the projection
you want from the Projection pull-down menu. (Note: You will not
be able to interact with the map if you select the Satellite projection.)
- Select what you wish
to view -- air pressure contours, wind velocity vectors, tropical
storm icons, and fleet ship position information -- by checking
the appropriate check box.
- If the Tropical check
box is selected and the map updated, clicking on a tropical storm
icon displays detailed information about the storm, position,
path and strength. (There is a storm displayed between Iraq and
Iran.)
- If the Position toggle
is selected, the location and four-letter abbreviation for each
ship in the fleet is displayed. If the button is deselected, no
ship positions will be displayed, but you will be able to select
individual ships in the tab view to the right.
- Press the Plot button
to update the display based on the selections you made.
